Hondas have a reputation for being reliable, and for good reason. According to Statista, US customers rate Honda cars 62/100 for their reliability. However, with the average transaction price up 2% in 2024, new Hondas are becoming a luxury.
Here’s the solution: used Hondas. Buying pre-owned can save you thousands while allowing you to get a quality car. Still, with so many models and trims to choose from, finding the perfect used Honda can be overwhelming.
Read on to learn how to find a used Honda from EchoPark Automotive that’s perfect for you and your budget.
Founded in 1946 in Japan, Honda has evolved from a small motorcycle manufacturer to a global automotive industry leader. Since 1959, it has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer and, in 2001, became the second-largest Japanese carmaker. The brand ranks among the top 10 most valuable car brands globally.
With a diverse product lineup, Honda caters to a wide range of drivers, whether you want compact cars like the Honda Civic, SUVs like the CR-V, or the family-friendly Odyssey minivan. The brand is best known for the Civic, a compact fuel-efficient sedan introduced in 1972. It was also among the first to implement hybrid technology with the Honda Insight in 1999.
What sets Honda apart from the competition? Simply put, the brand has pioneered some of the best technology in the auto industry. That includes variable valve timing (VTEC), continuous variable transmissions (CVT), and more.
Honda was one of the first automakers to launch a dedicated luxury brand, Acura, in 1986. The brand also offers products like garden equipment, marine engines, and power generators. It's involved in AI/robotics research and aerospace, too.
The following are Honda’s most popular models:
Like any other car company, there are certain features you’ll find in every Honda car. Before you buy a Honda used car, make sure it has the following features:
The Honda Sensing Suite is a suite of driver and passenger safety features released in 2015 in the Honda CR-V. The latest iteration, in its 11th generation, includes:
The Honda LaneWatch™ is a safety feature introduced in 2012 on the Honda Accord. This technology uses a camera on the passenger side mirror to show a live video feed of the right-side blind spot. When you turn on your signal, the video is displayed on the infotainment screen.
The Honda LaneWatch has been available in the Civic, HR-V, and Ridgeline since 2016, 2015, and 2017 respectively. However, it will soon be phased out in favor of more traditional blind spot monitoring systems. So, if you need a used Honda with this feature, look for the model years 2012–2024.
The Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system was introduced in 1989 on the Honda Integra XSi. In the early stages, it improved engine performance and fuel efficiency by switching between different camshaft profiles depending on the RPM. The first VTEC engines were known for their ability to deliver high power output at lower speeds.
The latest version of this technology, introduced in 2001, is known as i-VTEC (intelligent VTEC). i-VTEC builds upon the original VTEC by integrating Variable Timing Control (VTC). It allows you to adjust the intake camshaft phase in addition to the traditional VTEC switching. This results in smoother transitions and better performance across a wider RPM range.
By 2002, most Honda four-cylinder vehicles began using i-VTEC, which is still a standard feature in many current models.
Here’s how Honda stacks up against its biggest competitors:
No matter what model you buy, Honda cars guarantee reliability and longevity. If you buy second-hand, you can even avoid the high price point these cars often come with.
