There’s no denying America’s love for pickup trucks.
Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 were the top three best-selling vehicles in the country in 2022, according to Car and Driver’s annual list. The Ford was first with 653,957 units sold. The Chevy ranked second, selling 513,354 units. The Ram was third, racking up 468,344 units sold.
More stats to make your heart go a-flutter: the Ford F-series has been the best-selling vehicle in the country for the last 41 years, and the biggest selling pickup for the past 46. Ford claims it sold a F-Series truck every 49 seconds last year.
So, what is it with our love affair with the pickup?
Rugged utility is one of the many reasons drivers love a truck. Not only do trucks tow and haul heavy loads, they offer more handy features than a Swiss army knife. The Silverado’s Multi-Flex tailgate, for example, can transform that pickup into a mobile workstation, providing a flat surface for your laptop while you’re out in the field.
But today’s trucks also come with a large amount of refinement, boasting plush interiors, lots of tech features, a smooth ride insulated from road noise and enough room for everyone in the family. Plus, there’s a pickup trim to suit almost every budget.
Looking for your dream truck this Valentine’s Day? Here are three popular picks vying for your attention.
About me: I bring the brawn to the workday or weekend since I’m capable of towing up to 14,000 pounds of construction equipment, boat or camper, the most for my class, and can haul up to 3,250 pounds in my bed.
I offer six powertrain options, including V6 and V8s. Speed give you a little thrill? You’ll love the quick acceleration of my hybrid option. Plus, rear-wheel and four-wheel drive is available with every powertrain. I guess you could say versatility is my middle name.
I did a little self-improvement for the 2021 model year, getting a redesign inside and out. Some may say my ride quality isn’t as smooth as my rivals, but I say, let’s weather those bumps in the road together.
Loves: Sports, mainly for the tailgating. My available generator can power the speakers, TV and small appliances for those weekend parking lot parties. Score!
Future goals: Settling down and having a family. My SuperCab is spacious enough even for adults to ride comfortably in the backseat.

About me: Moves? I got ‘em.Starting with my Multi-Flex tailgate, a feature added for 2021 models. It opens and folds six different ways to make room for lumber for that DIY home project and keeping it in the bed while you’re on the road, for example.
For a full-size pickup, my handling could be considered agile. And whether you have champagne tastes or a beer budget, I’ve got a powertrain and trim for you, with features ranging from manual locks and windows to ventilated front seats and wireless smartphone charging.
Work ethic: Engine options include a V6, two V8s, diesel and a turbocharged 4-cylinder, so no matter the job, I’ve got it covered.
Loves: Camping. My max towing is 13,000 pounds and I’ve got a sweet suite of trailer assistance tech that will help you change lanes, along with a jackknife alert and cargo bed viewer that makes it snap to hook up a fifth-wheel trailer, according to Car and Driver. Let’s take a trip into the woods.
About me: I don’t mean to brag but…Car and Driver calls me the “best driving and most comfortable pickup” among rivals Ford, GMC, Toyota and Chevrolet.
Go ahead, raise your expectations. I’ve been compared to luxury sedans, boasting the smoothest ride around and a premium interior, plus the price tag to match. (Little secret: shopping at EchoPark will save you money on a new-to-you truck). My innovative air suspension keeps the ride cushy and I’ve got a big, I mean, really big, 12-inch touchscreen not available in the other trucks competing for your heart.
All that tech and luxury doesn’t mean I’m a city slicker though. That refinement comes with ruggedness too and I’m capable of towing up 12,750 pounds and hauling a payload of up to 2,320 pounds. There’s plenty of muscle for a week’s work, and plenty of room for you and your stuff for weekend adventures, with my large cabin and interior storage cubbies
Dream date: Gazing at the stars through my available panoramic sunroof.
Fun fact: I’ve got a wilder side. Does “0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds” make your heart skip a beat? Say hello to the Ram 1500 TRX, with a 702-horsepower, supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 under the hood, also known as the Hellcat. Let’s speed date!
