While it seems you can't throw a rock without hitting a Toyota Prius these days, there have been many great hybrids that have hit the North American market and just couldn't take off.  They were then discontinued in the US or the automaker quit making them altogether.  Every hybrid or plug-in hybrid cancellation is disappointing news for those looking for high MPG hybrids for commuting or those who just want to drive a more environmentally-friendly vehicle.

One popular gas only sedan which debuted as a hybrid in 2013 was the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid.  When it first hit the market, Green Car Reports gave it rave reviews for its acceleration, drivability and options, along with its 45 mpg in combined city-highway use.  They surmised that the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid doesn't "drive like a hybrid, which is to say with sluggish performance and an engine that howls under protest when pushed."  One thing that many hybrids have a problem with is that it can be very noticeable when the vehicle switches from gasoline to electric and vice versa.  The Jetta was reviewed as not having that problem and seamlessly blending the two in its driving experience.

A great thing about the Jetta hybrid for fans of the Jetta is that it doesn't differ in look and styling very much at all from the regular Jetta sedan. This is nice in the hybrid segment because many hybrids have a "funky" look to them that takes some getting used to.  The Prius and the Ford C-Max come to mind.  Another plus for the Jetta Hybrid is its availability in multiple trim levels.  Many hybrids are only made in one or two trim levels, so having many options is a bonus.

Unfortunately for hybrid and Volkswagen enthusiasts, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid was discontinued in 2017, with the 2016 model being the last model available.  However, you can still find a used Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid in some areas.  Because they weren't available in the US for long, it might require some searching to find one.  To date, there are no plans for Volkswagen to release another hybrid Jetta in the US, so if you want to drive one, you'll need to hit the used car listings and perhaps practice a little patience!
