BMW is an instantly recognizable name for anyone in the world of performance cars. These German-engineered vehicles pack performance and aesthetics into a finely-tuned frame — but, of course, at a hefty price tag. A used BMW 3 Series model can allow you to own a beautiful vehicle at a more reasonable price.
Since its release, the BMW 3 Series has been extremely popular worldwide, featuring in the Best Ten list of Car and Driver magazine. With the introduction of plug-in hybrids, they have also become a favorite for environmentally conscious drivers.
Before you begin your search for a used BMW 3 Series, here’s what you need to know about the vehicle.
BMW 3 Series models are compact, executive-class sedans that were first introduced in 1975. The first generation of the 3 Series was a two-door, but four-door designs were later introduced with the second generation.
The series is known for its stellar handling, sporty performance, and luxurious interiors. It’s currently in its seventh generation, code-named G20, which was first released in 2018. The G20 has a classic sedan body, while the G21 Touring (also a seventh-generation 3 Series model) has a station wagon body. However, the G21 was never introduced in the American market, and may be difficult to find used.
There are three models of the G20 you might find for sale:
The M3 version of the G20, released in 2021, offers the most performance-oriented features. While the body is essentially the same as the G20, it has aerodynamic body panels and flared wheel arches to accommodate larger racing wheels. There are two variants: the M3 and the M3 Competition, with the latter having racer features.
The core and M models are rear-wheel drive, with the option of all-wheel drive technology from BMW called xDrive.
The BMW 3 Series offers plenty of variations in terms of aesthetics and features, with the M models generally offering more bang for your buck. When looking for a BMW used Series 3, you’ll want to pay attention to the model and package of each specific car.
Here are three key features you’ll find in all models of the BMW 3 Series in recent years.
The turbocharged engines in the BMW 3 Series were introduced in 2012 with the sixth generation. Today, every BMW 3 Series features a variation of the company’s TwinPower Turbo engine technology across all models, both gasoline and plug-in hybrid. These engines make the vehicle powerful and efficient.
Because of this technology, BMW switched to lighter, four-cylinder engines in the core models. This engine offers several benefits, including a variable range, improved fuel consumption, and lower CO2 emissions.
As a luxury sedan, the BMW 3 Series is bathed in natural light through its large sunroof. This feature has been a constant on most 3 Series models since its fourth generation in 1997, opening up the cabin and creating an airy feel.
Since 2004, BMW Series 3 models have featured iDrive, the operating system and interface for infotainment. Drivers can control the climate, audio, and navigation through controls on the dashboard. Models before the sixth generation featured an LCD screen with buttons and a knob.
A touchscreen was introduced in sixth-generation models (2013-2016), making the interface more user-friendly. On BMW's seventh-generation models from 2018 and onwards, iDrive introduced Live Cockpit configurations, a digital instrument cluster, and an infotainment system that looks modern but has a learning curve.
With the 2022 facelift, the iDrive display was further enhanced with a curved screen that combines the infotainment screen and instrument cluster in a single wide touchscreen.
There’s a reason why drivers who love sporty and luxurious vehicles prefer BMW. The turbocharged engines deliver a dynamic performance with fast acceleration.
Since its inception, the BMW 3 Series has aced speed tests, showcasing impressive acceleration with every successive model. Although the acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour (MPH) varies by model and package, it’s impressive even on the core model. For instance, the latest 2024 model of BMW 330i goes from zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds. The 2021 model could do it in 5.4 seconds, while the sixth generation BMW 3 Series (2012-2018) had some of the highest speeds, going zero to 60 MPH in just 4.7 seconds. This kind of acceleration is found on the M models in the latest generation.
On the M3 model, drivers can also find manual transmission options for even more explosive acceleration. Thanks to a well-balanced build, the 3 Series models offer sharp handling and a smooth driving experience.
With the latest generation, BMW has improved the fuel economy of the 3 Series models. The 2022 BMW 330i xDrive has an EPA-rated average of 28 miles per gallon (combined city and highway) with premium gasoline. The plug-in hybrid variant can deliver up to 75 mpg with its electric battery.
In comparison, the 2016 320i model gives a slightly lower 27 miles per gallon (combined) on premium fuel. The models from the previous generation had even lower fuel economy. The 2010 BMW 328i had an EPA-rated average of 22 miles per gallon with premium gasoline.
If you want pocket-friendly fuel consumption, you should buy a more recent model of the used BMW Series 3.
BMW has engineered advanced safety features within all 3 Series models.
The core model comes with basic safety features like automated emergency braking and forward collision warning. Other features, like parking assistance, are only available in advanced feature packages.
