The Lexus ES (Executive Sedan) surpassed three million global sales in April 2023. That makes it the second best-selling Lexus model after the RX crossover. What's so special about this luxury sedan that it's been a beloved choice since the 80s?
Right off the bat, the heavy emphasis on a luxury interior makes it a great choice. If you’re not convinced, however, the option of multiple robust powertrains will sell you on it.
The best part is that with EchoPark, you can get this luxury sedan at a fraction of the original price. This guide has everything you need to know about the Lexus ES before you invest.
The Lexus ES series is a midsize luxury sedan introduced in 1989. All generations of this sedan have a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and a V6 engine. While initially based on the Toyota Camry platform, the ES has evolved to share elements with both the Camry and the Avalon.
Manual transmissions were available in earlier models, but later generations have a lower-displacement four-cylinder engine and a hybrid version.
The ES was the only Lexus model with front-wheel drive until the RX was introduced in 1998. It also dominated the entry-level luxury car segment until the debut of the IS in 1999. Today, it's available in three models.
The Lexus ES 250 AWD runs on a 203-HP four-cylinder engine. In a used Lexus ES 250, you'll get standard features like a touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, safety systems, and comfortable seating.
However, you can upgrade to the Luxury trim for enhanced features like a more adjustable driver's seat, wood trim, and upgraded leather seats. Meanwhile, the Ultra Luxury trim adds even more luxury with a larger touchscreen, head-up display, and a power trunk with a kick sensor. For a sportier look, the F SPORT Design trim features unique styling, a rear spoiler, and larger wheels.
The Lexus ES 350, introduced in 2006, has a powerful 302-HP V-6 engine while retaining the comfort and features of the ES 250.
The Luxury trim adds premium features like wood trim and upgraded leather seats, with the option of a panoramic glass roof. Meanwhile, the Ultra Luxury trim also features a head-up display and a power trunk.
Lastly, the F SPORT Design trim has unique styling, a rear spoiler, and larger wheels. In a used Lexus ES 350 F SPORT Handling trim, you'll get an adaptive suspension, sport driving modes, and upgraded seats.
Lexus US also offers five hybrid trims: ES 300h, ES 300h Luxury, ES 300h Ultra Luxury, ES 300h F SPORT Design, and ES 300h F SPORT Handling. Consider one of these trims if you appreciate the combination of style and eco-friendliness.
Here are three key features of the Lexus ES.
The Lexus Interface debuted in 2022, offering a more intuitive multimedia experience with a standard 8-inch or optional 12.3-inch touchscreen. This system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and is standard in all trims of the ES lineup.
Every Lexus ES trim features dual-zone automatic climate control, introduced in 2010. This feature allows both the driver and front passenger to set their preferred temperature settings independently! That means no more fighting over “too hot” or “too cold” during drives!
The Lexus ES features a heads-up display that projects all the important details on the windshield. This way, you can keep your eyes on the road while still seeing the navigation prompts and speed data. It has been available in the 250 and 350 models since 2024.
The surround-view camera system gives you a top-down view of the car’s surroundings. It can be a great help when you’re trying to park in a tight space. This feature is available in the luxury trims of the 250 and 350 models.
If a luxurious and comfortable ride is a priority, the premium trims of the Lexus ES won’t disappoint you. They have tons of lush features, such as the power rear sunshade, panoramic glass roof (which you can opt out of), and even memory settings for driver seats.
This feature was introduced in the F SPORT trim in 2019. Adaptive Variable Suspension adjusts suspension settings based on driving conditions to provide better handling and ride comfort. Currently, it's available in all ES series F SPORT models.
The Lexus ES has three different powertrains.
The base ES250 has a 203-HP 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with standard AWD. Meanwhile, the Lexus ES 350, used or new, will guarantee a 302-HP 3.5-liter V6, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and an FWD. The ES 300h, a hybrid model, delivers 215 HP from a four-cylinder engine, a CVT, and an FWD.
Overall, the Lexus ES is known for its responsive handling and comfortable ride. It's not rugged or family-oriented — it clearly appeals to luxury car buyers. For those seeking a sportier experience, the F Sport trim has larger wheels and a more performance-focused suspension. Even with this upgrade, the ES still doesn't have the athleticism of competitors like the BMW 5-Series.
The Lexus ES comes standard with Safety System+ 3.0, a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features. These include pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The feature first appeared in 2018 as the Safety System+, but the latest version has been available since 2022.
